A new support program is being planned for carers of people with drug and alcohol problems in the Warrnambool community. The Western Region Alcohol and Drug Centre (WRAD) will host a `Caring for Carers’ soup celebration lunch on August 26 where ideas for an ongoing support system will be discussed.
WRAD Director Geoff Soma said the role of carers was not always properly appreciated but they played a crucial role in helping people overcome their problems. “In a lot of cases carers are the most significant person in the life of someone with drug and alcohol problems and they are best placed to help them recover,” Mr Soma said. “However, it can be hard work helping people through these times and it is important that we support the role of carers,” he added. The Caring for Carers soup celebration lunch will be at the WRAD Centre from 12-1.30pm on Thursday, August 26 It follows a similar event during June where several carers met at WRAD during Drug Action Week.
Mr Soma said the carers stated that there was a lack of formal support and a need for improved communication and discussions about issues such as treatment. “Our lunch on August 26 will give carers an opportunity to spend some quality time together in a supportive environment. We hope to gather some ideas on how to implement a sustainable support system for carers,” he said. The function is open to all families, workers, volunteers, friends and other supporters of people with drug and alcohol problems. WHERE: 172 Merri Street Warrnambool (WRAD)
